America has had enough of the hype and through the power of the digital age the angry beast has awakened. While the music industry’s “big-wigs” are busy complaining about CD sales plummeting and free downloading, there is a new revolution of “real music” screaming loud and proud. With so many played out rhyme schemes and cookie cut images the fans will no longer settle for what the industry has programmed them to listen to for so long. In the midst of all the music industry’s turbulence and the social networking “whoopla”, there stands one man, with one beat and one rhyme. Don’t be fooled by his thugged-out persona because humble and hungry defines the intelligent business savvy hip hop artist, songwriter and producer Cookoo. Dedicated to his business grind Cookoo’s business sense caught the attention of Music Law Professor Kevin J. Greene. Professor Greene was so impressed he invited Cookoo to speak on a music business panel at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego’s premiere law school.  Born and raised in San Diego to a Filipino mother and Mexican father the “mestizo” rapper/producer is on a mission to break down the lyrical barriers. “I like being the underdog in an industry full of fake mc’s and trendy pop rappers. They see me all g’d up and are quick to judge me but then I spit a flow and it shocks them.” Dedicated to bringing back heart and soul to hip hop Cookoo is now in a strong position to do just that. In fall 2008 Cookoo won producer Flip Matrix’s “Best of The Best” online MC contest. Flip Matrix has produced for Ice Cube, Scarface, Xzibit, Jagged Edge and not to mention many more established artists. Recently Cookoo has collaborated on a few underground projects with multi-platinum super producer Focus…, CEO of a.Fam Entertainment. Focus… formerly of Aftermath Entertainment has collaborated with Dr.Dre, Busta Rhymes, Bishop Lamont, The Game, Lil Wayne, Beyonce, JLO and Christina Aguilera to name a few. Along with Cookoo working on a debut solo project Cookoo is one fourth of the 5 time best Hip Hop Nominee (San Diego Music Awards) South Psycho Cide. With a full group album ready to be released Cookoo branches off and debuts his first single “Me And My Beat”. With over 4.1 million artists on Myspace you can easily get lost in a cyber world full of wanna-be rock stars so Cookoo decided to enter the hit single into Myspace’s unsigned artist contest “Rock The Space”. For eight weeks Cookoo’s single “Me And My Beat” ranked in the top 10 nation-wide across all music genres and has gained him local and nationwide exposure. Amongst over 13,500 artists in the contest A top 10 song ranking is a milestone in its’ own right. To add icing on Cookoo’s cake for eight weeks strait the single held down the #1 spot in the biggest music market in the contest Los Angeles. Up to date “Me And My Beat” has well over 750,000 plays in the contest alone. “You can’t sit around waiting for things to happen, you have to get up, keep moving and create your own opportunities. I keep faith, stay focused, Lord knows I got a vision.”

Dear Cookoo,

Thanks for submitting the material for the evaluation. I enjoyed listening to the songs.

To give you insight to the scoring scale above, the majority of artists score in the 2.5 to 3.5 range in the various categories.

Whenever an artist sees a 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 or 3.5 as a score in a certain category (or categories) it means that's an area I feel they need to improve and develop.

When an artist sees 4, 4.5 or 5 as their score in a category, it's a validation from a professional, confirming that the songs are of the highest level and show strong potential in the ultra-competitive music industry.

To really raise the bar, every artist should work hard to earn a 4.5 or 5 in every category.

It's a very competitive business and people averaging in the 3's (or less) will probably not get too far without a great deal of improvement and development.

I don't give out 4's and 5's easily, so any of those you see, you have earned. Well done!

One thing to keep in mind, at least for your songs designated as "Singles" (the songs geared towards winning over radio stations, record company executives and music publishers) - try to keep Intros to under 10 seconds and try to reach the Chorus between the 40 and 42 second mark.

If it's 43 seconds or longer into a song and the Chorus did not kick in yet, you should edit the arrangement accordingly.

In rap music, like the songs you create, the chorus can come in at the 55 to 59 second mark, since the verses are traditionally longer, compared to pop and rock music.

Radio, Record Company and Music Publishing executives pay close attention to song arrangement, as they decide if an artist is developed enough for them to show interest.

For a free resource of helpful information, I encourage you to visit the "Press & Media" section of my Web site, www.FoleyEntertainment.com.

You will see links to several television interviews that I've done, all of which are filled with advice and tips that may be of help to you.

If you only have the time to watch one of the clips, I'd say the most informative is titled: "Poughkeepsie Live - Second Appearance" - from Time Warner Cable Television in New York.

If you are trying to gain the attention of record companies, music publishers, booking agents or top managers, make sure your game plan includes radio promotion, publicity, lots of gigs, Internet marketing and CD sales, at the minimum. Just having a great CD and live show are no longer enough in today's music business. You have to show industry executives that you have a product that has been marketed successfully on the local or regional level.

Thank you for the music submission Cookoo and continued best wishes!

Best wishes,

Eugene Foley
